Lady SGHS Herder Basketball Team

The SGHS Lady Herder Basketball team, after winning in Overtime against a
great Roundup team, was excited for their next Divisional game vs. the Baker
Spartans.  A win at this game would mean an automatic place in the State
Tournament.  A loss here means that the losing team has to win the next two
games in order to be one of the top three Divisional teams to advance on to the State Tournament.

Coach Kip Ryan calls a time out.

The SGHS Lady Herder Basketball team got off to a slow start in their second
game in the Divisional tournament vs. the Baker Spartans.  The Spartans
jumped out to a quick 7 - 0 lead over the Herders before Coach Kip Ryan
called a time out.  Larissa Flanagan pulled up the bootstraps of the team
with a big 3 point shot which lifted the teams spirit and sent a message to
the Spartans that the Herders were here to play!

Herders Congratulate the opposing team.

As the 2nd quarter progressed, Baker could not stop the SGHS Lady Herders
offensive attach, as they had to foul.  This proved to be a problem for the
Spartans and Big Timber capitalized on the opportunity.  With 1 minute left
in the second quarter, Baker had 10 fouls putting Big Timber in the double
bonus and thereby giving 2 shots to every foul that Baker made.  Big Timber
made 7 of 12 tries from the foul line in the first half. This brought Big
Timber to within 2 points with the score Baker 21 and Big Timber 19.

With a deep bench, Coach Kip Ryan continued to substitute in Jenny Gibson,
Brandi Mack, Rissy Obert and work through a rotation keeping the girls fresh
and giving pointers on the sidelines.  This stragety has proven to work for
the Herders, as their opponents end up getting out to a strong start with
the Herders coming from behind.   At the end of the first half, Jenny Gibson
sank two more free throws to give the Herders a 23 to 21 lead

Passing the ball.

A big difference in the first half was Big Timber's total domination of the
boards.  The Herders out-rebounded the Baker Spartans 27 to 13.  The team
boxed out well and worked together.  Turnovers continued to be a problem for
the Herders, as they had 14 to Bakers 9.

Baker could not convert their free throw attempts in the first half, making
a dismal 33%.   Big Timber was being out gunned from the field with Baker
shooting 37% to Big Timber's 22%.

As the second half started, the Lady Herders got off to a quick start with
Liz Oberly assisting to Rissy Obert for 2 points.   Score Big Timber 25,
Baker 21.

Big Timber had a tough time stopping S. Meggars who had 9 points in the
first half to lead the Spartans.  Meggars added a field goal and a free
throw early in the third quarter to bring the score to 25 to 24 Big Timber.
Each team exchanged and battled for the ball in the middle of the third
quarter with no scoring for 3 minutes before Liz Oberly put in a basket.
Score Big Timber 27, Baker 24 with 3:06 left in the quarter.

The inside games of Rissy Obert and Jenny Gibson continued to be on fire, as
the combined to dominate the games rebounds and points scored.  Starter for
the Baker Spartans, B. Steen had 4 personal fouls and was left on the bench.
Another Baker player, S. Boggs, was in foul trouble with 3, thus the Baker
Spartans were playing a little tentatively on defense as the Herders
continued to attack the basket from the inside to Rissy and Jenny.

With 1:01 left in the third quarter, Meggars of Baker added 4 points to her
total of 16 so far.  Score Big Timber 29, Baker 28.

Baker made some adjustments in the foul territory, and did not make many
fouls in the third quarter and then tied the game 29 to 29 at the end of the
quarter.

Big Timber's threat, Jenny Gibson, had to sit out at the end of the third
quarter with foul problems as she had 4.  This would be a problem for the
Herders offense. Baker then took the lead back for the first time since the
2nd quarter with Meggars adding another basket. Score 31 to 29.   Big Timber
had to find a way to stop Meggars without Jenny Gibson in the game.

Larissa Flanagan once again added a huge 3 point shot to break the Herder
scoring lull and Megan Chappel added her own basket to regain the Herder
lead.  Score Big Timber 34, Baker 33.

With 4:35 left to play, Jenny Gibson re-entered the game to a tie score of
35 to 35.  Gibson immediately made an impact on the game with an assist to
Liz Oberly and a defensive rebound on the other end. Big Timber up by 2.

Baker took a 20 second time out to strageize how to handle Jenny Gibson and
force her to foul.  Meanwhile Jenny Gibson had to be careful not to foul out
of the game as the end wound down.

Baker went ahead by 1 with 3:00 left in the game- the outcome of this game
was coming down to the wire.  Score big Timber 37, Baker 38.

Jenny Gibson sunk a basket to regain the Herder lead with 2:50 left in the
game.
Score Big Timber 39, baker 38.

Then Rissy Obert, leading the herders in both baskets and rebounding, added another field goal to give the Herder a 3 point lead.
41 to 38 with 2:22 left in the game.    Baker stole the ball and made a
basket to bring them within 1 point of Big Timber with 2:06 left.
Baker made a foul shot to tie the game.

With 2:00 left Larissa Flanagan made 2 huge free throws to give the herders
a 2 point lead.  Baker ties the game again with a Boggs basket.  Score 42
all and only 38 seconds left in the game and Big Timber having the ball.  It
looked like Big Timber would have a chance to hold for the last shot in the
game or Baker could foul quickly and try to get the ball back.  Baker was in
the double bonus, so a foul now would give Big Timber 2 shots at the charity
stripe.

Big Timber took off 18 seconds of the clock bringing it down to 20 seconds
before calling a 20 second time out.  It would all come down to the last
play..

With 9 seconds left J. Ho stole the ball from Big Timber  and Baker quickly
called a time out.  Big Timber now was on the defense and Baker was in the
Bonus, so if Big Timber fouled, Baker would have a 1 and 1 opportunity at
the foul line.  Big Timber then took a time out at this critical time.
They need a stop without a foul.  Could they do it???

With 6 seconds Brand Mack came up with a huge play- taking the offensive
charge from the Baker player and thus sending the game into overtime!  Yes,
they did do it.  Now it is a new ballgame with 4:00 on the clock for
overtime play.

Three jump balls started off the OT, a symbol of the game at this point- it
was all in the air.  Who would be able to score the first and put the other
team on the offensive?  The game remained tied in the first minute, 42 all,
but then Jenny Gibson fouled out giving Baker an advantage.  Could Big
Timber pull off the OT win without Jenny who had contributed 10 points and
10 rebounds?

With 2:13 left in the game, the game was still tied at 42 all.
Larissa Flanagan gave the Herders a 1 point lead and then Baker responded
with a field goal to give them a 1 point lead.  Score Big Timber 43, Baker
44 with 1:03 left in OT.

Then Boggs, who also is in foul trouble for Baker with 4 fouls, made two
crucial free throws giving Baker a 3 point advantage with 55 seconds left in
the game.

Liz Oberly brought the Herders to 1 with a basket.  Then Brandi Mack fouled
and brought Baker back to the free throw line- stopping the clock.  That was
Brandi's 4 personal and Baker with the free throw attempt 1-1 missed and Liz
Oberly made the rebound giving Big Timber a chance to go for the win with 23
seconds remaining.   Baker was still in the double bonus, so they would have
to have a steal or else Big Timber would have 2 chances at the foul line.
Turnovers plauged the Herders though, and Big Timber turned over the ball
with 18 seconds left in the game and then fouled Baker.  Baker then made
both free throws giving them a 3 point lead and sealing their win.  With
another foul, Baker won the game 49 to 45- a tough loss in overtime for the
Lady SGHS Herders.

The Lady Herders then had to win the next two games to go on to the State Tournament.  They played their nemesis Ennis, who beat them in another game that went down to the wire- Score Big Timber 56, Ennis 65.
