Plan for the 4B Girls Basketball Tournament November 8-11,
2000
Lady SGHS Herder Basketball Team
The SGHS Varsity Girls Basketball team played Boulder in their first district tournament game Thursday, Nov 9th at 6:30pm at the Bozeman Gym. The Lady Herders, after getting out to a shaky start won this game in overtime- squeaking out a hard won victory against the last seed team. This game was a good reminder that you cannot take any team for granted during the tournament time as each raises their level of play. The girls seemed nervous out on the court and never established a good game rhythm we have seen in the past.
The second seat SGHS Herders then went on to play Manhattan and were beat by a score of 43 to 65. Rissy Obert was our leading scorer with 19, followed by Jenny Gibson with 13, Megan Chappell with 5, and Andy Berry and Missy Roe both with 3 points each. The Manhattan Tigers dominated over the lady Herders in many categories - The herders field goal percentage was 29% as opposed to the Tigers 38%. The Tigers shot the lights out for 3 points also, shooting 35% to our 15%. The Tigers also had a good free throw night by shooting 67% to our 40%. This was not our best game.

The Herders then played on Saturday morning against Townsend where they won the game 49 to 40. They advanced to the Consolation round Saturday night to a great game vs. the Ennis Mustangs.
The Herders tied the Ennis game with seconds remaining and then had two shots under the basket which both went off the backboard, bounced on the rim and out to send the game into overtime. The Ennis Mustangs took over in overtime and won the game 86 to 80- a tough loss considering that the Herders created a great opportunity to win. In this game the herders shot great from the field - 40%, but the difference in this game was Ennis' free throw shooting - they shot 72% from the foul line. The lady Herders had trouble against Ennis' full court press and created lots of turnovers. Ennis scored 40 points off those turnovers. The inside games of both Rissy Obert and Jenny Gibson continued to dominate even though the Ennis Mustangs concentrated their efforts to defend both of them inside. Jenny scored 18 and Rissy scored 17 hard fought points. The Herders needed other players to step up the attack, and three players had outstanding scoring were Meggan Chappel with 15, Liz Oberly with 14 and Larissa Flanagan with 12.
The lady Herders also dominated on the boards by out-rebounding Ennis 63 to 42. Leading the way with rebounds were Rissy Obert with 16, Jenny Gibson with 15, and Larissa Flanagan and Liz Oberly each with 7. Overall, the Herders played what looked like a championship game with lots of intensity. It was a shame that one team had to lose this game, but both teams went out winners in the respect category. This game was for the pride of a 3rd place in the District Tournament as each team knew that they had advanced to the Divisional Tournament.
