Surfing the Internet Online Course
Chapter 4
Surfing, Browsing, and Browsers

Surfing the Internet Terms

Surfing- looking at the shared resources of the network of computers from around the world.
Browsing-is the same as surfing.
Links- the connections between related information.
Web Browser- a program that makes it easier to view information on the World Wide Web

Browsing

I think of browsing like shopping, when you browse a store, you are looking at what is there. When you browse the internet, you are looking at what is there.  The Internet, good at storing large amounts of data, allows individuals to browse richly cross-referenced texts and follow trails of interconnected information as one does in an encyclopedia.  Browsing is accomplished by following links, the connections between related information.

Web Browsers

A Web Browser is a program that makes it easier to view information on the World Wide Web.  Put in computer language, to surf or browse the internet (view the information), we use a program called a Browser. Two of the most common Browser Programs are: Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer.   In this course, I also have prepared a Tour of Internet Explorer.

Below is a graphic of what Internet Explorer Looks like. In the next part of this course, we will take a closer look at Internet Explorer.
