|
Construction is under way for the new Big Timber Post Office at the corner of 5th and Walnut. The main contractor plans to have the building done ahead of schedule, puting their target finish date about a month early or around September 1st. Soon after completion the new building will be operational. Loren Beling, Postmaster of the Big Timber Post Office, says that it is a quality building that will offer benefits over the old building. The new building is 7,518 Gross square feet, vs. the old building of 3449 square feet. Besides being bigger, the new post office houses approximately 100 Parcel Lockers. A Parcel Locker is a locker where packages are delivered and allows packages to be picked up after the service lobby is closed. Anyone who receives a package will be able to pick up the package with a locker key that has been placed in their mailbox. The locker key will have the locker number on it, and stays in the lock once the key is turned. You just then open up your locker to retrieve your package, and the key stays in the locker lock. If your package is oversized, too long, or will not fit in the locker, you will have to pick it up during lobby hours. Another difference of the new Post Office is that everybody will receive a medium or large sized box- no more small sized boxes. This will help customers who cannot make it in one day will not have to worry about their box filling up as soon. Also, bigger items can fit into your box, like CD's and Videos. With few exceptions, everybody will retain their same box numbers. The new post office will hold more boxes to accommodate future growth- 2,175 boxes as opposed to the 1,336 permanent boxes plus the 120 temporary boxes that the old post office currently holds. Two collection drive up boxes will be placed at the 5th street entrance, and the site will have 36 parking spaces along with 2 handicap parking spots. Also, there is a reserve parking spot for senior citizens. The main entry to the new post office faces Walnut Street, and the site will be nicely landscaped with many different types of trees and scrubs. A bench for people to sit on will be on the site as a courtesy and all entries are handicap power assisted.
