SGHS Herder Football team is practicing every day now in preparation for this years kickoff game vs. Manhattan.  This year promises to be a special year, as hopes are high for a herder win- the first in over 4 years.  The Football team has been given a boost with the new incoming freshmen who are coming off a good last years junior high school season.  Participation is up for this years football team, up to 46 from 25 last year.  The herders are looking not only for one win, but at a chance to win the districts.  Their goals are set high.

fball4.JPG (28101 bytes) This summer, Jeff Scrurran, a national high school championship coach from Arizona, came and talked with the Herder Football Camp.  The speaker talked about perfect practice, stressed weightlifting through his program called BFS or
Bigger Faster and Stronger.  During the clinic, the coach talked to the students about stretching, inline form when weightlifting, and ways to become a champion.  Eating good was high on the list of recommendations, as was getting cardiovascular exercise 3 times per week.  He also stressed year around weightlifting.

The coach demonstrated several key lifts aimed at getting a player in shape, faster, and stronger.  Those lifts were the squat, power clean, bench press an other lifts.  Also key to the program is stretching, as a flexible strong player will be able to exert his or her power over a longer range of motion, thus giving a more flexible athlete an edge.

fball2.JPG (62721 bytes) Jeff Moore was chosen out of the crowd of boys to demonstrate the squat lift- that is proper form. By using proper form and concentrating on not fighting gravity- that is to keep the center of gravity of the weight over the most powerful muscles, was key to weightlifting and also blocking, tackling, and running against your opponent.  What was impressive about Jeff's lifts was that he started with 225 pounds, and with spotters increased that weight to 315, and Jeff easily did this once, so the coach added another couple of 45 pound weights to make it 405 pounds + the safety clamps of 5 pounds for a total of 410 pounds.  Previously, Jeff had not squatted over 360 pounds 1 time.  He not only did the 410 pounds, but did it 3 times!  The school record, by the way, is 460 pounds.

fball3.JPG (38256 bytes) The coach showed that weightlifting  is like playing football- you have to use proper form to get the most from your body.  If you are fighting gravity and not pushing in line with the direction you need the weights or person to go, then you are fighting against yourself.  To demonstrate this, the coach asked for the strongest player- which others volunteered Mitch Cowen.  The
coach challenged Mitch that he could not hold 45 pounds for ten minutes.  He then gave Mitch the bar and told him to hold it out from the line of his body 5 inches.  This put the weight at an angle and made the weight very difficult to hold- even the strongest person he has never seen hold it over 3 minutes.  It was like holding a 10 pound sledge hammer from the end of the
handle out horizontally from your body with one hand.  The torque proves too much and you are fighting gravity.

The SGHS football players are winners for working hard as a team to reach their goals and we wish them the best.
