The game started with the Herders kicking off to the Tigers. The Herder defense held Manhattan on their first drive to four plays, the final one being a punt. This was a harbinger of things to come- to total domination by the Big Timber Herder football team.  Manhattan did not even know what hit them.

The first offensive play of the game was a running play which swept outside- the handoff given to Michael Novotny who usedfball7.JPG (46521 bytes) his speed to outrun the defense and score an exciting 76 yard touchdown run!  The extra point attempt was good, and the Herders lead 7 to 0.  The players were ecstatic on the sidelines jumping up and down as was half of Big Timber who came to watch the game. The feeling was that the Herders were going to win, and the town wanted to share the experience with the team and show their support.

It has not been easy for the Herders, with none of the varsity players ever winning a game, to keep on trying and beleiving in themselves.  The players won within themselves by persistence and the will to believe in themselves and not quit.  After three years of trying, the SGHS football students were going to give this game their all.

The drive was capped off by a 11 yard pass to Todd Stephens in the endzone.

When the Herders again went on defense, Dan Hodges intercepted a pass and ran back the ball 82 yards to score for the Herders.  The score was now 20 to 0. Tom Olsen ran the ball in from 3 yards out to add another touchdown and Jeff Moore added a 2 yard touchdown run.  An impressive 36 yard field goal into the wind by Mitch Cowen capped the Herder scoring and the Herders won 35 to 0.
