The Big Timber Bull O Rama was held Friday night at the Sweet Grass County
Fairgrounds. Forty of the top bull riders from Montana, Idaho, Wyoming,
and Canada vied for top honors atop bulls which are ridden at premier events
including the PBR circuit. Monty Finn, event organizer and participant had
a fantastic first round ride putting him in third place for the short go.
Monty then drew a bull called Darth Vader for his second ride and was bucked
off. Monty was not the only top 10 rider to get bucked off, as 8 of the 10
riders did not complete their 8 second ride. This was a great indication
of the quality of the bulls at this event. The only riders to complete
both of their rides won first and second place- they were winner Phillip Hofer
from Billings, Montana and Dusty Miles from Corvallis Montana.
The Bull O Rama did have one very scary moment. The rider hit his head on the bull as he was bucked off, leaving him dazed. Meanwhile, both bullfighters drew the bull away from the rider, yet the bull turned around and charged the rider who was on his hands and knees and was not aware. The bull rammed the mans head, leaving him on the ground unconscious. Then silence in the crowd remained as the emergency staff worked quickly to help the situation. The man regained consciousness and lifted his hand to the crowd as he was being transported out of the fighting ring on a gurney, thus letting the crowd know he was ok.
The Bull O Rama was announced by Joe Warner, the 1999 NRA Finals Announcer and Bullfighters were Shawn Penrod, 6 time NRA Bullfighter of the year and Kevin Niles of Rapid City, SD a NRA Finals Bullfighter in 1999. Brett Todd and Wade LaVoy were the judges.
