Memorial Day Weekend Events Planned
American Legion Remembers and Museum Tour

 


American Legion Ceremony of the past.

   Memorial Day weekend events happen this Monday, May 29 starting at 10am at the Big Timber Cemetery. The American Legion Post 19, Big Timber Montana will honor those who have fought for this country with a memorial, says Gordy Gaub, Post Commander.  Flags are put at the graves of all who have served for the military, and recently the American Legion has remapped the grave sites of the over 450 veterans who are buried at the Big Timber cemetery who served in conflicts dating to World War I.  

American Legion Flags.jpg (25105 bytes)"If you have not gotten to see the memorial day ceremony at the cemetery, you should go, it is quite a sight to see." says Big Timber Chamber President John Ronneberg.  Mr. Ronneberg is referring to the lines of flags that line the cemetery and road leading up to it and past the Crazy Mountain Museum.  The museum kicks off their season opener with events that follow the American Legion Memorial.  The Museum will be open for visitors to go through, and a silent auction will be held (to see the article describing the events at the Museum on Memorial Day, click here.  Art Sell, State Commander of the American Legion, will give a speech "Beyond the Medal" a remembrance of those who have won the Medal of Honor.  

After the 10:00am ceremony, the American Legion Club will go down to the Yellowstone Bridge (HWY 191) where they throw in flowers and wreaths as a symbolic gesture to the fallen.  Then the club will go to the Post 19 American Legion Building where they have invited all the public for a complementary noon lunch.  On the menu is hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans, potato chips, and lots of friends, family, and members socializing and sharing.  American Legion Yellowstone.jpg (33573 bytes)

The American Legion is "still serving America" by donating money and time to support high school students, charities, emergency aid to veterans, children and youth, veteran family support, and to the VA medical facilities.  The various programs that the Legion does include

Another noted event this summer is happening in Harlowton, where a Memorial has been erected called the Upper Musselshell Valley Veterans Memorial.  A ceremony to unveil this new monument will happen on July 4th and also celebrates the 100th year of the town of Harlowton.
