Hospitality House Newsletter April 2001
Here we are at the end of another month so soon again. That song "slow down you move too fast" must apply to my life. It has been a busy month as usual though. We have had four movies this month (a video of Dennis Awe playing the organ brought in by Nell Wendland, one called Wild Alaska and another called Cruising Alaska’s Inside Passage brought in by Richard and Viola Park and a discovery video about working dogs featuring Jane Favinger brought in by Nora Hanson), and of course the board and general meetings, plus an Area II meeting at South Park Senior Center in Billings, a trip to Livingston to the Firehouse 5 production of South Pacific, a budget audit, the due date for getting our Phillip Morris Senior Helpings Grant application in (we made the deadline), a trip to Rygate for a pinochle tournament (we won), 3 Lenten Luncheons (we went from 21 people to 31 people, did I mention they are non-denominational and great food and less than an hour) and the start of our Tai Chi classes (can you believe we had 25 at our first class?) And that was just in the first 3 weeks. This last week between the time I write this and it comes out in the paper we will have had Tom Hanel, Connie Kunda and Sally Inderland here to tell people that might be interested in moving to the assisted living complex how to go about selling their homes (what they need to do, fix up or look out for). We will also have a talk by Louie Strand on the deregulation of power and the tobacco education settlement, a Lenten luncheon and another tai chi class. This is all on top of the regular stuff we do, like recycle greeting cards and make beautiful new cards out of them, have kitchen band practice once a week and play bingo and cards and do puzzles and don’t forget about eating. Whew!
Our general meeting was held on the 14th with Viola Park presenting the report from the board meeting. She reported on the status of the health insurance (so far we haven’t gotten any but we are trying to get into a group with our Area II agency), the smoke detectors and fire extinguishers (we now have smoke detectors installed and the fire extinguishers have all been checked and recharged), the funding for the computers (we are hoping to have a fund raiser to pay for the costs associated with them), the Montana Flannel Project (a project to get flannel sheet for all nursing homes and hospices, they need an area coordinator), the feasibility of applying for the Senior Helpings grant for Meals on Wheels), and the senior of the year nominations ( our choice this year is Sig Thornby). Mention was then made that the Centerpiece has been donating flowers to the center and that Tom Merrit has been washing the senior bus for free. We then discussed our Kitchen Band Jamboree to be held on May 11th 2001 at the Civic Center. We have 6 bands coming to participate and the fun will be open to the public. Our drawings were then held and Dorothy Burmeister won the gift certificate donated by Doug Lowry, with the meals going to Nell Wendland, Lucy Davis and Hazel Ewan.
Our hoppy little Easter bunnies born this month are Jean Helvik on the 2nd, Vivian Baird on the 4th, Lucy Davis on the 5th, Alice Mord on the 14th, Lela Ultch on the 16th, Jeannie Luttschwager on the 18th, Ruth Schroeter on the 20th, Lou Snodgrass on the 24th, Nora Hanson on the 27th, and Berlene Stolte on the 29th. Happy Birthday!
The statistics for this month are congregate meals-715, home delivered meals-187, senior center patronage-1148, transportation-665, assisted transportation-46, health screenings-69 and homemaker hours-84.
