Community Need Assessment Feedback Organized

Currently, a couple of grants that involves our community as a whole is being spearheaded by Tracy Stephens, Grayce Sivgny, and Doug McCann with input and support from you.

The Sweet Grass Healthy Communities is headed by Tracy Stephens, Grayce Sivgny, and Doug McCann, but is made up of the community at large. Its purpose on Tuesday night was to brainstorm their mission for grants that Tracy and Grayce are applying for and to determine the needs of the community. The meeting took place before 50 community members who participated in brainstorming and providing input to the following questions posed below. Here are the results:

1.What do you see as our youth’s roll in the community? combined with

2.What do you see as the community’s role in developing the potential of our young people?

(Group compilations)

Encourage youth involvement in a variety of activities including sports that reflect strong family participation and youth center that could include a drama club, swim center, roller skating and tutor time.

We believe that the community is bases for one’s life and the way they will continue in their life and how they will react to the world. The community should focus on all areas that children of all kinds look at. For example if there is a troubled child they should help them so problems don’t arise later on in the community. - For protecting and developing the future of the community and beyond.

A community that is safe has a school that teaches basics and morality. The community provides personal and financial resources; community is ours should give support - community should provide useful learning activities. In all this the community supports family units. Our community needs to be open and friendly to all people. We need to be an inclusive community.

The community’s role in developing the potential of youth will be to provide positive leadership, strong role models, and a safe comfortable environment and recognize the qualities in our youth.

Provide resources necessary to develop their potential, in a proactive manner. Nurture minds and bodies with positive example. Provide youth opportunities to give back to the community.

We believe the community is an extension of the school and family responsible for recognizing the value of individuals, providing opportunities, and recognition for everyone through healthy, supportive role modeling of morals, goals, and standards. It should be a safe community which nurtures, guides, and challenges its members in a healthy direction to contribute to the local community.

The community’s role is to be leaders for our youth providing opportunities for alternate after school programs and to make leaders out of the youth - to develop programs that the kids would be interested in besides athletics - to provide a listening ear.

Mechanic fulfill their potential and development of skills

Provide community centered learning experiences through activates that include mental and moral

I believe the community’s role in developing the potential of our your people is to utilize available volunteers groups. Provide ways that youth can grow in useful activities outside of school.

Youth ‘s role ... - respect for leadership, peers Involvement in community service - Open communication and participation in decision-making process. - growth programs e.g. mentoring - enthusiasm - awareness of reciprocal relationship with community.

...to bring fun, creativity and new ideas to the community, to present the ideas and accept advise from wiser, older members of the comm. Comm. role is to act as an extended family of the youth. With each member of the larger comm. teaching and guiding the youth to learn to be responsible contributing adults that in turn will help the next generation.

Community role:

1. I believe positive leadership is essential. (As adults)

2. influence: the importance of education

3. community involvement

4. working together to accomplish common goals.

...is to be an example to the youth of today. It is hard to make an impact if our plan is do as I tell you not as I do.

...should be leadership modeling, governing the environment, -decision making with background of youth

...is to provide young people with a school that teaches the basics and morality - a comm that is safe.

...should give support to all youth to develop their own individual potential. A comm could provide resources both personal and financial to help youth to be able to grow.

... Above all let them know they are loved their ideas valued that they be encouraged. Be very friendly and encouraging to them. Tell them when they have done a good job.

... support - role models- learning/teaching - acceptance - listen - pay attention - time - activities (softball, basketball) - build self-esteem

...should have this cause there are too many people in this community with drugs. Think comm should have a place where kids can hang out.

...is to make something that’s fun and time spending and that will keep people off of drugs, alcohol and other stuff.

... should be in supporting programs for disabled people to help them succeed or plays. miniature golf. roller skating rink. Improve pool. Grass n the playground and carpet in the classrooms.

...is to support the school system - support 4-H and other youth activities - encourage youth involvement in a variety of activities including sports - strengthen families - tutor time- drama club -swim center- grass on playground- animal shelter- people homeless shelter

...is to set good examples. Also this community is very sports minded. It is very important to show good sportsmanship.

... supporting baseball summer and giving full support for basketball etc. Encourage young people to do oratory contests etc. - support extra - strengthen families - More plays -more cultural activities- miniature golf course- swimming center- teen center adults helping but kids participate

... is to support all activities. Plus I think that, as older kids should teach younger kids. Our parents and =teachers teach us elderly people teach them and so forth. - drama -min golf - roller skating - 3 Palace

...should be to provide the resources necessary for young people to develop their potential. They should also provide guidance to and serve as a role model for young people to ensure they become productive members of society.

... has a responsibility to nurture the minds and bodies by setting examples and action and

... is an environment for growth and opportunity where role models guide and challenge its members to create and opportunity for growth and service.

...is to recognize and value the person as an individual, provide opportunities for development and recognition for achievement. It is also important to extend this to everyone. We must make the effort to include even those that are not inclined to join.

... to provide a healthy, supportive environment. The youth should be able to look around the community and see morals, goals, and standards being set and learn from those.

I believe healthy minds interacting socially, spiritually and mentally strengthen and unite our community

I believe that the community is a place that all the young people learn from that if a community is caring and loving that the person will feel that is the way to go and will continue to be a lovi9ng and caring person for the rest of their life. If the community is not loving and caring then the person will be more drawn back and out of the world.

for protecting the and developing the future dreams.

I think that the community is responsible for providing youth with activities so they don’t turn to drugs and other things. Kids that are too young or don’t participate in sports just go home and sit around instead of doing something fun with their friends. Plus communicating and interacting with other people will help them go be more social later in life.

I believe that the community is one whole family. So if there is one little problem it affects the whole community. I think the community should make sure that every troubled child gets attention so that no big problems arise that would hurt the community now or later on.

I believe a community will shape a Childs life forever. What her or she learns they will show throughout their life, good communities help a child succeed.

The community is the sum total of the people who by their words and consistent actions communicate and convey to the youth the values, attitudes, and means to pursue that which will maximize the youth’s opportunity and probability to be contributing members of society at large.

Develop a report of ramifications (financial, family, health) of any addiction (caffeine, tobacco, alcohol, hard drugs, gambling). Develop a report on what the money spent on addictions could grow into if invested

3. With the resources on hand, how can this community reduce availability of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs?
The community needs to have equal punishments for every person in this community. So we are able to unit better. They need to widen the variety of resources. We are too limited. Suggestions: Teen courts (peer counseling), harsher consequences, people who know about kids that are doing ATOD to call on a hotline to tell police, peer encouragement.

It takes a community to raise a child.

4. What can we do as a community to make our children feel more safe?
Community Watch, More law enforcement patrols - especially around events. Peer support

Our community needs to set up a peer counseling system where children and teens can talk to their peers and not feel inferior or embarrassed like they would with adults. Our community needs to enforce laws fairly. (Consequences are the same no matter who you are.) Have a place where they can go and express themselves. (Teen center)

To have more safe places to go if there is a gunman or someone who is drunk going through town. Get people to train their dogs not to bite or chase people.

We can use more safe places in case of emergency (safe houses on every block). Emergency location downtown.

1.Organize welcome parties 2.distribute a resource list of available services 3. Make a map of the area.

Welcome and include them on projects with parents. Mentoring Build positive attitudes

Teach kids to say NO Show kids why to say NO someone with experience to show or explain hazards of drugs. Feel pretty safe - nothing to be afraid of.

What do kid perceive as unsafe? home, school, street? Community watch, knowing our neighbors, huge rate - houses have front porches, accepting each other, relations - everybody related.

Turn off the TV; teach moral values of inclusion and acceptance that all people and their ideas are sacred, special. Close relationships between law and youth.

More adult involvement in their activities. Education and Programs, effects of alcohol, drugs, and protection. mental health counseling.

What we can do as a community to make new residents feel welcome is to be more friendly and willing to help them. Let them know what resources are available in town.

strong recreational programs in community that helps working families
better communications within community between groups in Big Timber

Teen Center
This would provide a place where kids can express themselves without the use of ATOD and not be laughted at. It could provide a place where kids could het help and have fun at the same time. It would also provide an activity for more people than half the student body. It would help kids who don't participate in sports or the kids that use ATOD.

A group of teens have been discusing a teen center. At the grade school there is alot of votes for on. It covers many wide varieties of kids. Sports players, brains, ATOD users, and kids that just don't fit in.
